Natural Shampoo 101

There are many reasons why you might use natural shampoo. People like to use shampoos that they feel are “green.” Others find that natural ingredients lead to healthier hair. Natural shampoo products are often easier on dyed hair. You might also like natural shampoos because they may be used as soothing body washes also.

However, the word natural can be deceiving. Occasionally it does simply mean natural ingredients. Natural ingredients can refer to just about anything derived from nature. As a result the shampoo can contain a few natural ingredients and a lot of unnatural ones. Generally a few preservatives or dyes can be okay. Sensitive skin though can have a bit more trouble when it comes to colors and fragrances. The serious ingredients that you should look for may undo positive benefits of natural ingredients.

One of the most important ingredients to look for is laureth- or lauryl sulfate. This is what causes shampoo foam. However, it also will strip your hair. The result is hair that becomes brittle and weak over time. Also, it can fade color. Lightened, dull hair results from excessive lauryl sulfate use. When you are checking ingredients avoid anything with the words lauryl or laureth.

Always also look out for sulfides and sulfur. These are common in dandruff shampoos. You could argue that sulfur is natural. But it can actually exacerbate some types of skin conditions and cause dandruff. Should you decide to use a sulfur based shampoo, be careful of your eyes. Also, be prepared for hair that is drier than usual.

Truly natural shampoos share some common characteristics:

* They do not tend to have many ingredients - The majority of the components in most shampoos are artificial. Natural shampoos have a soap base and a few other components.

* You will not see much foam when using natural shampoos - This is because most foaming agents are not natural.

* They tend to have ingredients that you would see in your kitchen cupboards - You will likely see herbs, baking soda and even vinegar. In fact many people actually wash their hair with baking soda, apple cider vinegar and water.

If your hair is perfect and you love your shampoo, stick with it. But if you are looking for a new natural shampoo then be sure you are getting the real deal. The secret ingredients can seriously damage your hair. Always be sure that your natural shampoo is the real deal before you start washing your hair.
