Do Skin Cancer And Seborrheic Keratosis Have A Notable Correlation?

Are you acquainted with lesions on the skin? Have you felt scared when uncovering what lesion it is? Have you ever asked yourself whether it is a simple rash, a bite of an insect or a manifestation of other more grave diseases? Well, instead of just doing nothing and worrying, start doing something about it. Since you already have your skin as the proof, you can now just look into some books or browse through endless sites on the internet But if a trustworthy internet source or medical book advises it is already a symptom of a far more threatening disease, get seen by a doctor right away.

Now, we will talk about one type of skin lesion – seborrheic keratosis. Keratosis, a scientific term, means the unnecessary additional growth of keratin – a protein found naturally in the skin. It can appear from yellowish to brownish with some cases, even blackish in colour. Some are flat but most they are slightly raised or elevated. And although normally small, it can increase up to one inch across. In form, it is mostly rounded or oblong shaped. It often appears like a wart but is very dissimilar from it. Though some keratosis may be seen on the skin alone, they usually grow in populous batches or groups. For its location, it usually choosesthe chest, both anterior and posterior, though they can turn up anywhere else in the body. But this type is most commonly known for its waxiness or greasiness. It is also important to be informed that this does not cause pain at all. Just do not chafe the lesion so you can prevent its inflammation and you will be fine. From this, there is really nothing crucial about seborrheic keratosis, or is there?

Possibly most of you have thought that seborrheic keratosis is a condition that can form cancer. Before we go any further, we must first answer the query: “What is skin cancer?” It is as of yet the cancer type. Only in the United States, 12.5 percent of Americans suffers from skin cancer. But you will be glad to learn that it is easily detected because physical examination of the skin can be done conveniently. Therefore, it is the form of cancer that is most successfully treated. Based on the types of cells they involve, skin cancer comes in 3 types. The most widespread skin cancer is the basal cell carcinoma (BCC). Even though malignant, basal cell carcinoma grows at a slow pace and may not always metastasize. A minute, luminous nodule manifests at first. Then it spreads and grows leaving behind an ulcer at the center. Following basal cell carcinoma in occurrence is the squamous cell carcinoma. In contrast, this has a speedy growth, undergoes metastasis, its consistency is firmer and redder in colour. Lastly, malignant melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer. Its warning signs can be explained using the mnemonic ABCDE. Assmetry, crooked borders, varied in colour, a 6-millimeter or more diameter and elevation are its typical characteristics.

Now, we can respond the question whether it is precancerous or not. It absolutely does not as unlike actinic keratosis which leads to squamous cell carcinoma. It is indeed a benign skin growth. Patients only have to worry about the lesser issues, namely, deformity of your physical appearance and to be careful of irritation and it becoming uncomfortable should be your only concern.
